Betel Leaf
Piper betle
The heart-shaped leaf at the centre of the Indian pan tradition — peppery, cooling, and long used after meals.

What the research says
Betel leaf contains eugenol and chavibetol, studied for antimicrobial and carminative activity. The leaf alone carries none of the risks associated with chewed areca nut preparations.
Brewing tip
Infuse, never boil hard — high heat turns the leaf bitter and metallic.
Questions
Is betel leaf safe?+
The leaf infused as tea is a traditional digestive. The health risks of pan come from areca nut and tobacco, which we never use.
What does it taste like?+
Peppery and cooling, a little like a cross between basil and black pepper.
