The compound, not the flower

Chamomile's reputation rests largely on a single flavonoid: apigenin. It binds to benzodiazepine sites on the GABA-A receptor — the same broad system that pharmaceutical sedatives act on, at a fraction of the affinity.

That weak binding is the point. Apigenin is associated with a mild reduction in sleep latency rather than sedation, which is why a nightly cup does not produce the grogginess of a sleeping tablet.

What the trials actually show

Randomised trials in older adults and in people with generalised anxiety report modest but repeatable improvements in sleep quality scores over two to four weeks. Effect sizes are small; consistency matters more than dose.

Crucially, most positive results come from extended use, not a single night. Treat chamomile as a habit with a slow curve, not an intervention.

Brewing decides the dose

Apigenin and the volatile oils sit in the flower head. Broken chamomile dust extracts fast and thin; whole flowers extract slower and fuller.

Cover the cup. Uncovered, a measurable share of the aromatic fraction leaves with the steam — you can smell precisely what you are losing.
